NADI TOWN COUNCIL CIRCULAR – 2019
- WASTE MANAGEMENT
Residents are informed that with the recent extension to the town boundary and amalgamation of
Rural areas with municipal council, Nadi Town Council will be providing extended service for the
collection of household garbage in your area effective from Monday the 6th of May, 2019.
Therefore you are notified as follows:-
1.1 The collection in your area will be done once weekly (inclusive of Public Holidays).
[Note: Residents are advised to take out the garbage by 6.00am on the day of the collection only).
1.2 The collection will include garbage such as kitchen waste BUT does not include trees and
shrubs/grass, tree branches, bulky waste such as soil, construction/building materials and any other
Commercial or Industrial waste.
1.3 Residents are required to use proper garbage pan/bins with tight fitting lids for the effective and
efficient discharge of garbage on the roadside.
1.4 The residents with feeder roads/tracks not accessible to trucks are urged to have community
meetings/discussion and erect/construct high raised collection stand at a convenient place along the
main road (accessible to trucks) for your easy storage and council removal. This is to be maintained
and managed by the residents.
1.5 For those residents whose house is located along the main roads are requested to place their garbage in
front of their premises along the roadside.
1.6 All garbage is to be placed on the roadside before 6.00am on the collection days.
1.7 The collection truck will go through the area ONCE ONLY on the allocation days.
1.8 Residents are requested to utilize the garbage collection services and keep their area and surroundings
clean.
1.9 Any garbage that is scattered is not the responsibility of the collection crew to clean.
- Use of proper garbage receptacles
Take note that it is mandatory as per the provisions of the Public Health Act Cap 111 that:- “ every owner
or occupier of any premises shall provide sufficient number of garbage pans, each of a capacity of not
more than 3 cubic feet (0.085m³/85L) of a type and shape approved by the local authority (Nadi Town
Council) and provided with tight fitting lids, for the reception of dust, garbage, ashes and refuse arising
from or existing upon such premises and shall:-
(a) At all times keep such garbage pans close covered except when depositing dust, garbage, ashes
or refuse therein.
(b) Keep the garbage pans and covers thereof clean and in good repair and condition.
(c) Place the garbage pans in position easily accessible to the Nadi Town Councils garbage collector
and, when more than one is necessary, they shall be placed together.
Any person or corporate body or any other organisation who is found to be using improper garbage bags such as
supermarket plastic bags, cartons, native baskets, sacks, and open plastic buckets will not only be issued with
insanitary notice to provide proper garbage pans but will also be issued on-the-spot fine of $40.00 as per the
provision of Litter (Amendment) Act 2010 and Litter Act 2008 and be further liable to a fine not exceeding
$1,000.00 upon successful conviction. Alternatively a red sticker will be placed by council on any
improper/Defective bins.
It is anticipated that all businesses and residents will co-operate with the Council in Keeping Nadi
Clean, beautiful, healthy and liveable and assist in achieving its CITY STATUS.
- Home Composting
Home composting is an effective activity to treat residential kitchen and garden waste
which is easy to manage. The council is promoting home composting as part of its waste
minimization plan and is promoting organic compost use in home gardens.

A project for the promotion and sales of
Eco-bags (made from waste cut pieces)
in cooperation with the women’s groups
and the garment factories/ tailoring
shops in Nadi. The new 20 cents levy on
plastic bags capitalizes the opportunity
for women of various groups to earn a
living while protecting the environment
from plastic bag menace.
The bags are sold at the Health
Department of the council and are
affordable, durable, and washable.

promotion of the Eco-bags to our
citizens, ratepayers and visitors
